French workers from the meat sector believe their health condition has deteriorated
13/11/2007
Workers from the meat industry which produces beef, pork, and poultry in France believe they are working in poor conditions, according to a study carried out in Brittany by the InVS, the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance. These findings indicate that workers in this sector regard that they are at risk physically and psychologically.
Most workers in this sector are on their feet the all day and work often in cramped spaces. They have to stick to tight deadlines and their rhythm is determined by automated lines. It is not surprising that the percentage of workers who suffer from musculoskeletal disorders is high in the meat industry. 92% of the surveyed workers have suffered of at least one MSD disorder last year.
When it comes to psycho-social risks, workers from the meat sector feel that they have low human and material resources at their disposal to provide quality work and they generally believe that their chances of being promoted in their organisation is slight.
