Denmark: Union study finds high occupational cancer levels in building workers
30/03/2007
Researchers from the Danish Confederation of Construction Workers’ Unions (BAT-Cartel) have analysed statistics in the Danish National Cancer Registry. They found a range of jobs had a statistically significant risk for a variety of cancers. Rates of lung cancer and mesothelioma in plumbers were over three times the expected level. In carpenters, joiners and electricians, mesothelioma was more than twice the expected rate, and over six times higher among insulators. The study also found an excess of lip cancers in outdoor workers, and some excess lung and stomach cancers among painters.
