The Confederation of Lithuanian Industry has upped its game ... The employers’ association recently lobbied the government for the right to push up the working week to 60 hours. At present, working hours in Lithuania and 14 other EU States are within the maximum limits set by Brussels - currently capped by a 1993 Directive at 48 hours a week. But the European rules also allow States to go above 48 hours if the workers are consulted and agree individually. The United Kingdom makes use of this so-called opt-out clause.
The industry confederation’s plans have sparked uproar and protest among Lithuanian trade unions. The government has held off bringing in the 60-hour week, which would violate the existing law laid down in the 1993 Directive.
