Older workers who have lost their job have a higher probability of having a stroke
Workers over 50 who have lost their job have a 50% higher probability of having a stroke compared to their colleagues who are still working. This is the finding of a study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. In the States, from 1992 to 2002, 4,300 individuals aged between 51 and 61 were screened by researchers from the University of Yale.
" A loss of employment is an extremely stressful experience. It could have an impact on one’s health and it is known to have caused strokes. Our results prove that unemployment is responsible for such serious health problems. This is a heavier burden on the state than the obvious financial burden caused by unemployment” said the authors.
