Quebec: Psychiatrists believe more attention should be given to mental health at the workplace
Mental disorders associated with work are becoming a significant threat for the economy and for social cohesion. The association of psychiatrists in Quebec has drawn people’s awareness to the problem and has called upon the authorities to create innovative projects aimed at reducing stress at work.
"We have learnt from our patients that the lack of control on working conditions is detrimental to their mental health”, said the psychiatrists. The practitioners point out that stress at the workplace is associated with globalisation, job insecurity and inadequate forms of management. Common mental disorders such as depression, anxiety and addictions have become the main cause of work disability. Statistics have shown that every year, almost 10% of the workforce suffers from mental disorders.
