The report, produced by a working group of the European Forum of Insurances Against Accidents at Work and Occupational Diseases and coordinated by Eurogip, sheds light on current insurance practices in thirteen countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland. The report reviews the procedures and criteria for recognition of the job-related nature of diseases caused by asbestos, in particular asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural plaques. The second part presents the statistics relating to the number of cases recognised between 1980 and 2003, on these four “asbestos diseases” and for a few other diseases. The report then deals with specific insurance systems: medical monitoring of exposed workers, identification of diseases and initiatives to search for new cases. A section is devoted to compensation for victims with two case studies. Finally, in a fourth part, the report reviews estimates of mortality due to mesothelioma in Europe over the coming years.
