A new report on the working conditions of ageing workers gives an assessment of the difficulties for keeping the job in different sectors. Physical factors play an important role (for instance, heavy workload). Asocial working time is also an important cause of painfulness. Among the other factors, the meaning of work must be considered. 5% of the workers in the health and social services feel that their work is not useful against 23% of the workers in the food industry.

The Report will provide a background knowledge for French employers’ organisations and trade unions in the context of a national negotiation on “painful work and retirement”.
