In 2002, the number of pathologies acknowledged in France as occupational diseases has increased by 16,7 % and has reached 41.673 cases representing a total amount of 1,12 billion euros in compensation. This figure represents a 37,6 % increase according to the annual report by the Superior Council for the prevention of professional risks (Conseil supérieur de prevention des risques professionnels).
In 2003, the number of occupational accidents has decreased but more serious types of accidents were recorded. The Caisse nationale d’assurance-maladie (CNAM) has registered 770.662 occupational accidents in the private sector. In other words, they were 41 accidents out of 1.000 employees. This figure is down by 5% compared to 2002.
However, statistics have revealed an increase in serious pathologies (48.774 self-reported cases, representing a 3,8 % increase), namely in the transport and temporary work sectors. In these sectors, a 7 % increase has been recorded. In 2003, accidents at the workplace have caused the death of 661 workers.
As for occupational diseases, musculo-skeletal disorders (MSD) represent three quarters of compensated diseases.
