From 5th - 10th December 2004, the ICFTU has organised its 18th World Congress in Miyazaki, Japan, under the theme of "Globalising solidarity - building a global union movement for the future". Over 700 delegates from the 234 affiliated organizations of the world's largest trade union organisation were in Miyazaki.  A commom campaign of the Trade Unions for a World Ban on Asbestos is one of the central priorities of the International Trade Union Movement.

They adopted a resolution on health and safety.
