Belgium: 2008-2012 plan to improve the health, safety and welfare of people at work

On the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2008, the Belgian Minister of Employment asserted that the enhancement of health, safety and welfare at work will be one of the main priorities of the next legislature. She outlined the following measures: adoption in 2008 of a plan for "Health, safety and quality of life at work"; launch of the first quality survey on the state of health and safety at work; reduction in the number of occupational injuries based on the European objective; improvement in the prevention and treatment of occupational diseases; improvement in the functioning of outside OHS services, especially regarding the exchange of information, and tighter controls; increased welfare for workers "in transition" and more precarious workers through greater information and special attention paid to psychosocial risks; reduction in risks related to the psychosocial burden at work via the application and evaluation of the 2007 Act; reduction in addictions, alcohol and tobacco abuse at work, in cooperation with the public health system and the Communities.
